Congratulations, Class of 2020!

Congratulations to the 6th Grade Class of 2020! As we reflect on our school year we couldn’t be more proud of these students and their accomplishments during their time at Nerge School.  We wanted to share with you ways we are recognizing this milestone.

  • Tonight all of the lights in the school will be left on overnight as a symbolic representation that our 6th Graders are the light of the future.  After all, we’ve been reminding them all year: Class of 2020, Future so Bright!  D54 has added a banner to the front lawn of our school to mark this event.
  • All students received a lawn sign to proudly display at home and a JH feeder t-shirt to wear this summer.
  • The video linked below was created to commemorate this special moment for students and families to enjoy together.
  • The Nerge PTA has also planned for some special swag to be delivered to our students’ homes in honor of this rite of passage.

We would like to take this opportunity to recognize the recipients of the 2020 Presidential Award. Recipients of this award met the following criteria: an average of 8 semesters (between grades 4-6) of a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in all content areas and consistent performance at the 90%tile or higher on MAP testing.  Students and families can expect to receive their certificates and pins in the mail, as the company who issues these awards has recently resumed business as usual.

Nerge News

There have been a few changes to our technology collection plan this week – please read the following changes carefully:

2nd Grade Student iPad Collection – UPDATED
We will no longer be collecting iPads from 2nd graders this week.  We hope this change will enable students to utilize the devices over the summer months.  The District will be scheduling a 2nd grade iPad collection/Chromebook exchange in early August.  Additional details regarding this will be communicated later in the summer.

Student Google Accounts – UPDATED
The District has decided to keep ALL current K-7th grade student accounts active so devices will be functional during the summer months.  With community libraries still closed, the devices can be utilized for students to continue reading over the summer.  We are asking parents to be diligent in monitoring student device usage to ensure they are being utilized for appropriate purposes.

Device Collection on Friday for Non-Returning Students – UPDATED
We will still be collecting district devices (Chromebooks/iPads with chargers) from any student who will not be returning to Nerge or a District 54 school in the fall. The drive-thru for all non-returning students is Friday, May 29th from 11:30-12:30 PM.  If you are the parent of a 2nd grade student and you still want to turn in your child’s iPad on Friday instead of keeping it for the summer, you can utilize the drive-thru device drop-off between 11:30-12:30 PM.  Your child will be issued a Chromebook in early August.

Student Materials Pick Up
If you were not able to pick up your child’s materials last week, you can visit Nerge on Friday between 10:00-11:00 AM.  We will be in front of the school, so you can drive up to return materials to Nerge and pick up your child’s supplies that were left in the classroom.

Nerge News 5.25.20

Thank you for such a smooth and memorable student materials drop off and pick up last week!  Seeing you and your children was the exact pick-me-up we needed.

As we launch into the final week of the school year, we want to express our gratitude for your partnership and support.  Thank you for working with us to ensure your child’s social emotional and academic success, both in person and virtually.  On behalf of the Nerge uKNIGHTed flight crew, have a healthy and happy summer!

Please see the information and announcements below for Nerge and District 54 happenings.  The Nerge News will be up and running weekly once again in early August.

Technology Drop off for 2nd Grade and Students Not Returning to Nerge/D54 Only

On Friday, May 29 we will be collecting iPads and chargers from 2nd grade students ONLY.  We will also be collecting district devices (Chromebooks/iPads with chargers) from any students who will not be returning to Nerge or a District 54 school in the fall.  This means 6th grade students heading to Mead and Keller should keep their district devices for over the summer.  Please be advised that the devices for other grade levels are District 54 property and will be utilized in the fall.

Please place your child’s device in the trunk of your car.  On Friday, May 29th, use the time window designated to your child’s teacher and kindly “drive through” toward the Nerge main entrance for curbside drop off of district devices.  Our staff will remove tech materials from trunks.  Parents, students, and family members must remain in cars the entire time.  We will contact any family who does not return tech materials as these devices are property of District 54.

In accordance with the Illinois State Board of Education guidelines, report card grades for the third trimester will be designated as Pass or Incomplete. Final year end grades for students in fourth through eighth grade will reflect second trimester grades or higher as evaluated by student work across the third trimester.

We hope that all families will check the report cards and use the information to celebrate with their children their academic successes. We are all very proud of our students.

We look forward to seeing you and your families during the student material and supply drop off and pick up drive through this week!  We welcome you to use this opportunity to decorate your vehicle with signs and/or well wishes as this will be a great moment for you and your child to bid a farewell to this year’s teacher (from the safety of your car, of course)!

Parents/Guardians, please place all district materials (with the exception of iPads/Chromebooks) into one trash bag labeled with your child’s name and the name of their classroom teacher.  Please place this bag in the trunk of your car.  These bags will be returned to each teacher’s classroom so materials can be sorted and organized.

Week of May 18-22: Student Material and Supply Drop off/Pick up

During this week, we are giving families the opportunity to drop off school materials and pick up your child’s personal supplies and items using a “drive through” method.  Thank you for adjusting your schedules to be available to the dates and times outlined below.

Using the date and 30-minute window designated to your child’s teacher listed below, kindly “drive through” toward the Nerge main entrance during your assigned times for curbside drop off of school materials and pick up of personal items.  Our staff will place student personal materials in the trunk of your car and remove the district materials bag from your car accordingly.  Parents, students, and family members must remain in cars the entire time.

Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate providing families with multiple children with one school visit.  We ask that you follow the scheduled dates and times for each child separately.  We appreciate your understanding and willingness to place our staff’s safety and health as a priority over convenience.  With these same priorities in mind, we will not be scheduling alternative dates for family pick up of student personal supplies.  We hope the two week notice of these dates, times, and procedures will help your family plan accordingly.

On your child’s grade level date, V-Learning will look different.  An enrichment activity will be pushed out to students for completion only.  This enrichment activity will replace your child’s typical schedule and assignments for that day.

Fourth Grade Students and Parents – Band and Orchestra Enrollment Information

As many of you know, students traditionally enroll in the District 54 Instrumental Music Program in the spring of fourth grade and begin lessons in fifth grade. Due to our unique circumstances in the spring of 2020, instrumental music enrollment will be held once school resumes in the fall. In the meantime, we encourage fourth grade students and their parents to visit the District 54 website (https://sd54.org/resources/instrumental-music-enrollment-spring2020) to view information about band and orchestra enrollment so that they are prepared to choose an instrument and join the fun!

Third Trimester Grading

The Illinois State Board of Education has said that student work completed during the statewide closure should not count negatively toward student grades or a student’s academic standing. However, District 54 will continue to design high quality lessons and activities for students; to assess student progress; and to provide feedback on student work.  District 54 teachers will be issuing either a “Pass” or “Incomplete” for third trimester grades.

Registration for 2020-2021

Registration for the 2020-21 school year is now open and available through the Infinite Campus Portal.  If you have previously created a portal account and cannot recall your username or password, you can reset them yourself from the portal website. Go to http://sd54.org and click on Infinite Campus Parent Portal under Popular Links.  If you have not previously created a portal account, please email portalsupport@nullsd54.org to create one.

To enroll your child for the 2020-21 school year:

Update Your Information:  Log on to the parent portal to review the current information and make any necessary changes. You must hit the SUBMIT button after reviewing the information, even if you don’t make any changes. If your child(ren) will not be attending District 54 schools next year, please inform our office where your child will be attending school in the fall so that we can prepare your child’s records for transfer.  You can email our secretaries at JenniferElkins@nullsd54.org.

Residency:  All families are required to prove that they live within District 54 boundaries every year.  If we were unable to verify your residency electronically, you will have the ability to upload your residency electronically through your portal.  If you are unable to upload the documents needed at this time, you will be able to provide them in person when our offices reopen.

If your address information was verified electronically, you will not be prompted to upload residency documentation and will not need to provide any documents.

Information about busing and material fees will be communicated this summer. Should you have any questions, please contact the Nerge School office at the above email. Thank you very much.

D54 Foundation Golf Outing Rescheduled- August 10, 2020

With the current stay-at-home order in effect until at least the end of the month and keeping the safety and well-being of our sponsors, golfers and volunteers in mind, the District 54 Education Foundation has postponed the 23rd Annual Golf Outing to Monday, August 10, 2020. We hope that by then we will all be able to safely come together to benefit our students and their families.

We are appreciative of all of the already committed sponsors and their dedication to the success of our students. We hope that those who have already registered to golf are able to join us on our new date. Throughout the summer and in the weeks preceding our event, we will continue to keep everyone updated on the logistics of the outing.  To become a sponsor or to register for golf, visit d54foundation.org/golf-outing.

District 54 Summer Camps Cancelled

Due to this unprecedented time we are faced with, all District 54 Summer Camps have been cancelled for this year. These camps include, Summer STEM, 54 Fitness League, Camp Creative, Language and Culture Camp, and Summer Instrumental Music. If you have submitted a payment for any camp, you will be issued a refund starting Thursday, April 30, and you should see a credit appear on your statement within 14 business days.

The camp facilitators are going to miss seeing students this summer. Students in all grade levels can stay engaged by participating in the School District 54 Summer Virtual Learning University, which is filled with fun activities and challenges for students and families to participate in together from home. The link for the Virtual Learning University will be on the School District 54 website in the last week of May.

School Supplies

The PTA is excited to announce we have partnered with a new LOCAL company this year for our annual school supply sale.  Shane’s Kits Company will supply all of the items from the supply list requested by our teachers so you won’t have to run to the store in August to find everything on your child’s school supply list.  These kits will be delivered directly to your home as well, so you’ll have everything in hand for the start of school.  Please see the attached flyer for ordering information. Nerge 54 2020 School Kit Ordering Flyer.pdf
