Nerge News 9.17.18

Our students have finished their MAP testing this week.  They did a wonderful job carefully attending to their test and trying their best to answer the questions.  The MAP results will be sent home by the end of the week and student created goals will be shared during our Student-Led conferences on October 4th and 5th. If you did not sign up for conferences at Back to School Night or Curriculum Night, please contact your child’s teacher to set up a time for your conference.

Half-Day Inservice

Please remember, this Wednesday, September 19th is a half-day.  Students will be dismissed at 11:40am.

Universal Screener

As a school, we strive to meet the needs of the whole child, including the social-emotional needs of every student.  Our teachers know your child by name and by need and we work hard to build relationships and understand all of our learners.  As we discussed during Curriculum Night, our staff are focused on ensuring a Positive Culture at Nerge.  Part of this focus is assessing the status of our culture during key points of the school year.  We briefly shared that one assessment point will be our “Universal Screener”.  To better ensure we support every student, this year we will be using a universal screener to help us ensure we have identified every student who may need additional social-emotional support.  The universal screener is a series of questions that staff members complete for the students they support. Students do not participate in the screener or receive direct feedback about the results. If your child has elevated risk factors identified through this screener, we would contact you directly to discuss how we can work together to intervene and support your student.  This is simply one additional way for our staff make sure we are helping every student be successful.  If you have any questions about the screener, please feel free to contact me.

PTA News & Upcoming Events

Our first regular PTA meeting will be on Tuesday, September 18th at 6pm. Child care will be provided. Please come join us to learn about all that is happening at Nerge PTA and how you can get involved.

Nerge News 9.4.18

Dear Nerge Community,
We hope you had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. As we kick off the month of September, we will begin bringing Shawn Achor’s positive psychology research to our students and community. We will focus on two main concepts that promote happiness.

Quantum Key: This Is It

Make the most of each moment! Students can demonstrate “This Is It” actions throughout the day by being productive, using positive language, and doing their best on all tasks both in and out of school. The students are eager to take advantage of these magical opportunities throughout their day.

Happiness Advantage Principle #1

“Happiness is the center, and success revolves around it.” Shawn Achor.
Students will learn various ways to boost their happiness. Ideas include:

  • Meditation
  • Find something to look forward to
  • Commit conscious acts of kindness
  • Infuse positivity into your surroundings
  • Exercise
  • Exercise a signature strength

These are great topics to discuss at home with your child and practice together. We look forward to creating a more positive environment and supporting habits that promote happiness both in and out of school.

SEL (Social/Emotional Learning)

As part of District 54’s Promise, our staff has the goal of working to ensure that every child has success in their learning. To work holistically with students, teachers will be working through a social/emotional learning (SEL) curriculum. The staff at Nerge has always sought to build a strong class culture and community by looking through topics that our students are facing and addressing the needs of our learners. We are excited to implement our district-created SEL curriculum as we strive to meet the social and emotional needs of all children. As a parent, you play a vital role in supporting your child and Nerge School. Parents can access the Home-School Connections as a tool to help guide your conversations as a family. Please take advantage of this wonderful resource, and let us know if you have any questions.

Erin’s Law

Four years ago, we began implementing a child sexual abuse prevention program in our schools as the result of the passage of Public Act 097-1147, also known as Erin’s Law. This law expanded upon previous legislation and required child sexual abuse prevention education for child beginning in pre-kindergarten and continuing through all grade levels. Our students will be participating in lessons in their classrooms in October. Please contact us at 847-357-5777 with any specific questions.

In the morning staff supervision begins at 8:25 a.m. We ask parents to not have students arrive prior to that time as there is no supervision for students. During the school year all students arriving by bus will enter through Door #1. Walkers/Car Riders will enter through Door #1 or Door # 6. Our parking lot closes from 8:25-8:45 AM and 2:45-3:00 PM during the school day. Therefore, no cars will be allowed to enter or leave the parking lot. We ask that parents please follow these procedures as it ensures the safety of all students.  Students need to be in their seats ready to learn at 8:40 a.m. If students arrive late to school, a parent or guardian must sign their child into school at our school office.
